Where Did White Gold Come From?

The 19^th century saw the invention of white gold. At the time, manufacturers alloyed gold with palladium. It wasn’t commercially available until 1912, when it was issued as a patent in Pforzheim, Germany, subsequently gaining popularity as a more affordable alternative to platinum in the mid-1920’s. Essentially, it was gold alloyed with copper, zinc, and nickel. Nowadays, a metal belonging to the platinum family often replaces nickel because it prevents skin allergies and other allergic reactions. Depending on the recipe, the alloy can possess various characteristics when it comes to ductility, malleability, and hardness; in turn, different alloys can be used for different purposes.

1940s & WWII

World War II interfered with jewelry making in the early 1940s. precious metals were either rare or used for warfare purposes. In some cases, there was an explicit ban on selling precious metals for nonmilitary purposes. This especially applied to platinum. At the time, low-carat gold alloys were used, and they had a higher percentage of copper. Asa result, the gold gave off a subtle, yet perceptible reddish tinge. In addition, different alloys results in different colors appearing within one gold piece.

Reintroducing Older Designs

The techniques used for producing gold were weaving, braiding, and coiling. Consequently, certain patterns, such as resilla, cannetile, and lacy filigree, made a comeback. The design was accentuated by juxtaposing different textures, for example, matte and bright finishes. Eventually, gold was in widespread use for jewelry making in the 1940s and 1950s.

As a consequence, synthetic and faux gemstones started featuring in novel jewelry designs. Gemstones like citrine, amethyst, aquamarine, and topaz enabled a wide palette of hues and a range of sizes. Higher-carat gems such as diamonds, rubies, or sapphires were extremely rare. Jewelers used small precious gems in pavé and invisible settings with the aim of creating a massive-looking piece comprised of a number of small ones. Post-WWII Trends

While pre-WWII designs typically paired colored stones with diamonds, the scarcity of gemstones resulted in the combinations of colored stone with no diamonds. If you decide to propose on Thanksgiving, make sure your timing is right. Popping the question right after everyone has eaten is probably not the best idea. Everyone will be in a food coma and probably won’t be paying much attention. You’ll also have to watch out for those that have been drinking most of the day.

Thanksgiving is a big day for drinking – you certainly don’t want Cousin Joe ruining your proposal because he had one too many beers. Try to opt for earlier in the evening, maybe when everyone is sharing what they’re thankful for. Mention how grateful you are for your partner and then get down on one knee. There won’t be a dry eye in the entire room.

Christmas Eve

Many families celebrate on Christmas Eve, which makes this day another popular day for proposals. Christmas Eve dinners are a special time for family and loved ones to gather and enjoy the holiday spirit. If this is a time you and your sweetheart cherish every year, proposing is a fantastic idea. If the ring is burning a hole in your pocket, why wait one more day?

Just don’t forget to think about both sides of the family. If you propose on Christmas Eve with your partners’ family present, your family might be slightly offended. Or vice versa. This one really depends on the person. A Valentine’s Day proposal can either be incredibly romantic or incredibly cliché. If you and your significant other traditionally celebrate Valentine’s Day, then by all means, let Cupid shoot you with his arrow and get down on one knee! You can keep it fairly simple or go all out with flowers, balloons, champagne, and chocolates. This will make your Valentine’s Day even more special in the years to come.

Who Founded Tiffany & Co.?

Tiffany & Co. is one of the most universally recognized fine jewelry brands. Since it was founded in 1837, Tiffany & Co. has produced highly desirable necklaces, engagement rings, earrings, and other kinds of accessories. Collections such as Return to Tiffany®, Tiffany Infinity, and Tiffany Celebration® have earned the company status as an iconic American brand time after time. The distinct Tiffany blue color has become a symbol of fine jewelry, high-end fashion, and sophistication. That did it take to become one of world’s biggest brand names? There is more to the company’s history than meets the eye.

The Early Years of Tiffany & Co.

The premier jewelry store was founded in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John F. Young. Originally, it was called Tiffany & Young. In 1853, Charles Tiffany bought out his partners, established sole control of the company, and renamed it as we know it today – Tiffany & Co.

In the beginning Tiffany and Young did not intend on selling jewelry. The store was opened as a “stationary and fancy goods” store with a $1,000 advance from Tiffany’s father. During the 1867 Paris World’s Fair, Tiffany & Co. was awarded the grand prize for silver craftsmanship. This marked the first time and American design house had been so highly honored by foreign peers.

Tiffany has been a valuable asset to America’s history for over 170 years. During the Civil War, Tiffany designed ceremonial swords as well as swords to be used in battle by soldiers. In 1885, Tiffany redesigned the Great Seal of the United States, which is displayed on the back of the dollar bill to this day.

Since Superbowl I in 1967, Tiffany & Co. has created each Vince Lombardi trophy. The trophy stands just under two feet tall at 22″, weighs over 7 pounds, and is adorned with a regulation-size football. While the first trophy was given to Vince Lombardi in 1967 after the Green Bay Packers victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, the trophy wasn’t the “Vince Lombardi Trophy” until his death in 1970.

In 1886, Charles Tiffany had an epiphany about how engagement rings should be set. Rather than having an exceptional diamond hidden in a bezel setting, as was the fashion at the time, he decided that the diamond should stand out above the band, maximizing its brilliance. Tiffany & Co. is also highly regarded for their yellow diamonds. Tiffany’s love for these rare and radiant diamonds dates to 1878 when Charles Tiffany purchased the 287.42-carat Tiffany Diamond. The priceless stone, one of the world’s most important diamonds, was cut into a cushion-shape brilliant weighing 128.54 carats and still resides at the trademark New York Tiffany location.

Tiffany’s reputation continued to flourish with the production of the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This was allegedly the first time the store ever opened on a Sunday and allowed filming inside. During production, Tiffany hired 40 security guards to protect all the precious pieces.
