Should You Propose on a Holiday?

2023-11-242024-05-24 by Rylee Kahan

‘Tis the season for proposals – engagement season is officially upon us! In the US, the most popular time to get engaged is from November to February. Last year, about 40% of all engagements occurred during the holidays. Historically, we’ve seen spikes in engagement ring purchases as soon as the holiday season rolls around. The reason behind this is quite simple – engagements during the holiday season are very sentimental and idyllic!

First of all, winter is an especially romantic season. The cooler weather, the changing colors of the leaves, the falling snow (if you live where it snows – sorry, San Diego), and all of the bright and beautiful holiday decorations make the perfect backdrop. And of course, we can’t forget about the joy and cheer that comes along with this time of year! Additionally, the holidays are all about spending time with family. And since most couples spend time with their friends and family during the holidays, there seems like no better time to propose than when surrounded by all of your loved ones.

Holiday proposals are very romantic and cause for a grand celebration. Although, before you make this important decision, you have to consider how your significant other feels about a holiday proposal. If they aren’t as enthusiastic about the holidays, maybe it’s best to pick another day that is meaningful to the two of you. But if your special someone is all about spreading the holiday cheer and love, a holiday engagement would be a great way to seal your forever love.

Top 5 Most Popular Proposal Dates

Planning a holiday proposal? We’re looking at the 5 most popular days to get engaged during the holidays. We’ll also touch on the perks and possible downfalls of each day, so you can decide if a holiday proposal is right for you and your special love.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is popular for proposals because it’s one of the few times a year most of your family gathers to be thankful for their lives and those they love. If you and your special someone are super family-oriented, proposing during Thanksgiving is a great idea. It’s very sentimental, and you can even involve members of both families to make it an even bigger surprise.

If you decide to propose on Thanksgiving, make sure your timing is right. Popping the question right after everyone has eaten is probably not the best idea. Everyone will be in a food coma and probably won’t be paying much attention. You’ll also have to watch out for those that have been drinking most of the day.

Thanksgiving is a big day for drinking – you certainly don’t want Cousin Joe ruining your proposal because he had one too many beers. Try to opt for earlier in the evening, maybe when everyone is sharing what they’re thankful for. Mention how grateful you are for your partner and then get down on one knee. There won’t be a dry eye in the entire room.

Christmas Eve

Many families celebrate on Christmas Eve, which makes this day another popular day for proposals. Christmas Eve dinners are a special time for family and loved ones to gather and enjoy the holiday spirit. If this is a time you and your sweetheart cherish every year, proposing is a fantastic idea. If the ring is burning a hole in your pocket, why wait one more day?

Just don’t forget to think about both sides of the family. If you propose on Christmas Eve with your partners’ family present, your family might be slightly offended. Or vice versa. If you’re not able to get everyone together under one roof, pop the question with her family on Christmas Eve. Then, share the celebration with your family on Christmas Day. Just make sure you have plenty of pictures and videos!

Christmas Day

Christmas Day is actually the most popular day to get engaged. Maybe it’s all the love in the air. Maybe it’s because everyone is already in the spirit of giving. Or maybe it’s all the egg nog. Regardless of the reason, Christmas engagements can be very special. Wrap the ring in a larger box so no one will have any idea what’s about to happen. Yours will be the best gift tucked beneath the tree.

It’s important to keep in mind that Christmas isn’t just about the two of you. Your engagement certainly is, but it’s best to be respectful and check with the family to make sure they’re okay with sharing this special holiday with your big moment. You also want to be at least 95% sure your partner is going to say yes. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but it would be incredibly embarrassing to be rejected in front of all your loved ones.

New Year's Eve

Picture this: As soon as the clock strikes midnight, you kiss your beloved and then drop to one knee. In the midst of all the excitement and the bursting fireworks, it feels like you two are the only ones in the room. They say yes and you enjoy the rest of the evening celebrating with friends and basking in your love. How romantic!

If your significant other isn’t much for crowds, this may not be the best idea. If they would rather your engagement be just the two of you, you may want to consider choosing a different evening. Or if you’re dead set on a New Year’s Eve engagement, escape the crowds and chaos a few minutes before the clock starts counting down. Whisk her away to a private setting and make the special moment just about the two of you.

Valentine's Day

This one really depends on the person. A Valentine’s Day proposal can either be incredibly romantic or incredibly cliché. If you and your significant other traditionally celebrate Valentine’s Day, then by all means, let Cupid shoot you with his arrow and get down on one knee! You can keep it fairly simple or go all out with flowers, balloons, champagne, and chocolates. This will make your Valentine’s Day even more special in the years to come.

But say your other half isn’t really into all the mushy gushy love stuff that comes along with V day. It’s probably best to choose another day. Proposing on a holiday that your significant other isn’t very fond of just doesn’t make sense. It may seem like you don’t really know them at all.

The moral of the story? If you’re going to propose during the holidays, make sure it’s a holiday that is special to the both of you.

Find the Right Local Independent Jeweler

2023-08-112023-12-09 by Rylee Kahan
Jeweler Starting Work on Loose Diamond with Tweezers

Buying an engagement ring can be one of the more significant purchases you’ll make in your lifetime. There is more to consider than just the financial aspect. You want this piece of jewelry to be a representation of enduring, lifelong love.

There’s an entire succession of decisions to be made – the size of the band, the choice of the center gemstone, the carat weight, cut, clarity, and color of any diamonds, etc. You can’t redo a proposal, so you want to make sure to plan each detail and avoid the typical mistakes.

But before you dive into the specifics, the first thing to decide is where you will buy the ring. There are some important things to consider before you choose where to shop. This should include the unique advantages of opting for an independent jeweler over a chain store. Where it the best place to buy in engagement rings in San Diego? We’re here to enlighten you on the many benefits of buying locally.

The Value

Price is one of the bigger factors to bear in mind when buying an engagement ring, but so is value. When shopping by price alone, you can end up with a lower quality ring. Some jewelry store chains tempt people with what appear to be lower prices. What can you expect to get for those apparently low prices? Non-GIA-graded, lower quality diamonds and precious stones in uniform settings.

Their inventory typically offers a limited number of styles and designs, meaning your choices are few. Most of these chain stores look like exact replicas of each other, with very few distinguishing features. In short, being offered a low price at a jewelry chain store does not consider the quality of options as well as the actual jewelry itself.

With independent jewelry stores, you’re dealing with a business that survives on repeat customers and referrals. This means that they will strive to make their patrons happy and build a positive reputation within the community. With their lower overhead expenses, independent jewelry stores give you better value for the money spent. Plus, they usually offer discounts and special promotions that other retailers don’t.

At Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers, we have special offers for our customers every month. Plus, we offer special financing options. But most importantly, when you shop with an independent jeweler, you can find quality GIA-certified diamonds, warranties, and custom work done by an in-house team of jewelers and Graduate Gemologists.

The Integrity

Jewelry chain stores carry an inventory of mass-produced items. They must get these items sold quickly to make room for new incoming products. Some salespeople can be as aggressive as the stereotypical used car salesmen. A few even get a reputation for misinforming buyers about ring flaws and characteristics.

Some chains brand their own diamond cuts and/or use a proprietary grading system.  Their purpose it to make the gemstones difficult to compare to those at other stores. The GIA diamond-grading system is the industry standard. Any chain store that steers clear of providing GIA certificates speaks volumes about their sales tactics.

At the risk of repeating ourselves, we’ll emphasize the fact that independent jewelers serve the community, and their service strongly underpins their reputation. The quality jewelry they offer comes with certificates that meet or exceed industry standards. And the terminology they use in describing their jewelry adheres to the terms and definitions of the trade. Additionally, the service you receive is of high quality and personal.

The Selection

You would expect a chain store to have a huge selection because of their buying power, but that’s not commonly the case. Chain stores often focus on and promote their proprietary brands and lines. These are almost always mass-produced. These store usually don’t carry many designer collections besides their own.

They sometimes carry collections signed by celebrities, and though we may admire certain celebrities and their styles, they are neither jewelry designers nor artisans. If you want to buy something that’s custom or unique, you’ll most likely be hit with a hefty price tag and must pay in advance for them to order it for you. Independent jewelers have a varied selection of numerous new and vintage designer lines which you can see in person and try on before you make your purchase.

Tips for Designing the Perfect Engagement Ring

2023-06-302024-05-31 by Rylee Kahan
Three diamond engagement rings featuring different settings.

The many different options for engagement rings can be a little overwhelming. And sometimes, it is too hard to decide on just one. You’ll find a diamond you love, but the setting is not the right style. Or vice versa. Maybe you like the band on this ring, the setting on that ring, and the style or color of yet another ring!

If you find yourself being drawn to certain elements of engagement rings, but not the ring itself, you might want to consider designing a custom engagement ring. Custom engagement rings are an excellent way to be sure your significant other truly loves the ring and will cherish it for a lifetime.

Whether you will be shopping around with your significant other or are planning a surprise engagement, we’re sure you will find these six custom engagement ring design tips very helpful.

Choose a Reputable Jeweler

Aside from your relationship with your future spouse, this is one of the most important relationships you can form! You are entrusting this person to create one of the largest and most important purchases of your entire life. You’ll also be working very closely with the jeweler you choose on something very intimate – be sure you trust their work and value their opinion.

Look for the best custom engagement ring designers in your area. Ask friends and family for referrals. Do a quick search online to see which stores rank the highest, have the best reviews, and have work similar to your vision. This ring will be worn for a lifetime; you want to be sure you choose someone who has the skill and knowledge to make your dream engagement ring a reality.

Draw Inspiration

Know the specifics of what you like and dislike. Not into the glitz and glam of halo designs? Maybe a classic solitaire is a better style for you. It’s very helpful to have these ideas written down somewhere to share with the jeweler you choose. If you’re a list person, try making a pros and cons list. If visuals are more your thing, print out photos or make sketches of certain ideas you have.

In today’s time, social media is extremely useful for this step. Pinterest is a great source to use. Ladies, are you trying to drop hints to your man for what styles you like? Create a public Pinterest board so he can see them! Gents, this just made your job a whole lot easier, and you know you’ll be designing a ring she’ll truly adore. When designing your very own engagement ring, you can borrow ideas from anywhere.

Try on Different Styles

Have some fun trying on different styles before you decide on anything. A ring can look different on your (or her) hand. You might think you like a certain cut or style, but you won’t truly know until you have actually seen it on a finger. Visit different jewelry stores to test out different cuts, sizes, colors, and styles.

Do Your Research

This step will help you narrow down the specifics of the custom ring you will design. What size diamond does your special someone desire? Has she mentioned anything about the specific clarity she wants? What about the kind of metal for the band and setting? Should you opt for a solid color or mixed metal style? Answering these questions beforehand will also help you figure out what fits your budget and what doesn’t. Obviously, the bigger the center stone and the less included it is, the more expensive it will be.

Similarly, the type of metal chosen will impact the total price. Platinum is a common choice for engagement rings because it is durable and hypoallergenic. But it’s also one of the most expensive precious metals. If you appreciate the shine of platinum but must stick to a budget, a good alternative is white gold. Don’t forget about the wide array of other options too: silver, yellow gold, rose gold, palladium, and titanium.

There are many different factors that go into designing a custom engagement ring. Each one directly affects the final cost. Plan accordingly so you don’t go over budget. You’ll want to get a quote from the jeweler, so you won’t be surprised by the cost of custom engagement rings.

Collaborate

After you have some idea of what you want, schedule a meeting with your chosen jeweler. Make sure to bring all your visual inspiration; the more ideas you can show them, the easier the process will be. A jeweler is an artist, and because of this, there should be a little bit of creative freedom allowed to them. After all, they are the experts. List then to their advice.

For example, if you’re designing an engagement ring for an active woman with a hands-on job and you’ve selected a cathedral setting, your jeweler might suggest otherwise. Are they trying to sabotage your ring? No! They just want to make sure the ring can be worn as often as possible, and the center stone is protected from potential damage. Your jeweler is here to help, and your collaboration will make the whole process smoother.

Give Yourself Enough Time

One of the most asked questions when it comes to custom design is, “How long does it take a jeweler to make a custom ring?” But there is really no straightforward answer! Custom ring design is an entire process – you’re not walking into a jewelry store, selecting a ring that is on display, and leaving with the ring the same day. The custom engagement ring timeline is much more involved than that.

Once you’ve had an in-depth conversation with your jeweler about your desires, seen a wax or computer-aided design (CAD) model, made any revisions, and approved the final design, only then can the real magic happen. The time it takes for your ring to be finished depends on the number and types of stones being set, the intricacy of the design, and the type(s) of precious metals used.

Your jeweler is creating a lifelong symbol of your love and commitment, and you can’t rush perfection! Typically, custom engagement rings take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Give yourself enough time for the ring to be completed before you pop the big question.
